For over 35 years, A Safe Place provided crisis intervention, support and emergency shelter to those who experienced domestic violence and SASS (Sexual Assault Support Services) assisted individuals and families affected by sexual violence. Both agencies provided services around the clock, 24-hours a day, 365 days a year.
Although A Safe Place and SASS saw countless people benefit from their services as separate agencies, there were also many challenges and inefficiencies that arose as individuals sought help at one agency only to be referred to the other. This prompted several informal discussions throughout the years of the possibility of merging the two organizations. In May of 2014 the process began.
On July 1, 2015, A Safe Place and SASS officially merged into one nonprofit agency, becoming the largest in New Hampshire providing support services and prevention education to those impacted by domestic and sexual violence.
The goal of the merger was to increase efficiencies and build capacity to do even more to assist women, men and children affected by domestic and/or sexual violence in Southeastern New Hampshire. The merger will provide individuals with comprehensive services so they can experience limited barriers to receiving support in order to begin a journey forward with stronger, more stable footing.
