33395344_lStudies have found that between 25% and 40% of battered women are unable to escape abusive situations because they worry about what will happen to their pets or livestock if they leave.

Animal abuse includes physical harm to pets including kicking, hitting and killing as well as neglect in which a pet/animal is refused water, food and shelter.

Research and statistics show a link between animal abuse and domestic violence. An abuser may threaten to harm a pet to maintain power and control over the victim. These threats can make it difficult for victims to leave their abuser.

Under NH law a victim can ask for protection of their pets through a domestic violence or stalking restraining order. HAVEN provides resources to help assist victims and their animals. Please call our 24-Hour Hotline for more information 1-603-994-SAFE (7233).
