Please join us Wednesday, April 29th by participating in Denim Day! We are asking our community members to join HAVEN in standing up to misconceptions around sexual violence by wearing jeans on April 29th. Whether you are at work, home, or working from home, we encourage you to put on your favorite pair of jeans and challenge your friends to do the same to raise awareness for sexual assault.
WHY DENIM? Denim Day follows a ruling by the Italian Supreme Court where a rape conviction was overturned because the justices felt that since the 18 year old victim was wearing tight jeans she must have helped the person who raped her remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim. Since then, wearing jeans on Denim Day has become a symbol of protest against erroneous and destructive attitudes about sexual harassment, abuse, assault and rape.
