In efforts to end violence and change lives throughout Southeastern New Hampshire, HAVEN is committed to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
Marsha P. Johnson
Today we celebrate Marsha P. Johnson. Pride Month is celebrated in June because of the famous Stonewall Riots that took place in June of 1969, where Marsha was a central figure standing for justice for the LGBTQ+ community. She was an activist for LGBTQ+ rights, homeless youth, sex workers, prisoners and people with HIV/AIDS. She was a survivor of sexual assault and violence. During Marsha’s lifetime, trans women did not even have the terminology they have today, but Marsha, who was born a biological male, identified as a Queen. In her legacy, she remains a Queen and a source of inspiration for people to live and love without fear of judgement.
“How many years has it taken people to realize that we are all brothers and sisters and human beings in the human race?”
Marsha P. Johnson
Marsha’s words are a heavy reminder in our hearts that work still needs to be done. Violence, racism, oppression and other forms of discrimination still exist. Justice is still demanded and an understanding that we are all human beings, deserving of respect and equality, is still needed.
HAVEN would like to take this month to celebrate pride and bring awareness to the strong individuals of the LGBTQ+ community and share their stories.
